How One NY Company Is Solving Water
Released on 01/29/2019
[Narrator] The water infrastructure system
in the United States is crumbling rapidly.
Over 240,00 water main breaks and untold pipe leaks
happen every year.
Plaguing the nearly century old water system
and costing US business and consumers
over $2.6 Billion in cleanup.
In 2017, America received a D+ infrastructure rating
by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
But one New York based company
is setting out to solve water.
Xylem, headquarter in Rye Brook, New York
is using artificial intelligence
to update the US's aging water system
and prevent leakage all together.
The problems of water infrastructure are escalating daily.
I would even say it's more stress now
than it was 10 years ago.
The big issue is what we term in the industry,
non revenue water.
[Narrator] Non revenue water
is water that has been produced
and is lost before it reaches the customer.
[Joe Vesey ] So the typical non revenue water leakage
in most US cities is between 20% and 30%.
[Narrator] Globally the annual value of that loss
is close to $14 billion.
If you think of the water scarcity
and water quality issues that we have,
there's something immoral about waste.
[Narrator] In a perfect world
the aging infrastructure would be replaced in it's entirety.
However experts estimate that this would cost
upwards of $1 trillion to achieve.
Xylem has an alternate solution.
A smart water infrastructure.
Utilizing artificial intelligence
to manage massive amounts of data,
Xylem is able to pinpoint critical events
that will lead to leakage earlier.
This tech replaces highly antiquated ways
of identifying water leaks.
[Jay Iyengar] Many times there's breakdowns that occurs,
where they have to actually have to send a crew
to go address it.
They have to dig a few places
to figure out where the leaks are coming from.
[Narrator] That's where next gen technology,
like visenti, developed by Xylem,
is using AI to change our aging water structure.
If your pumps could send back data that says,
I'm likely to fail in three months or two months,
you could deploy maintenance crews
to really fix those problems
before they became a much bigger issue.
[Jay Iyengar] Visenti technology
includes sensing technology
which is both the pressure sensor, acoustic sensors
build a hydrological model,
a digital twin of the water distribution system
And having that information,
collecting real time data from sensors,
we are able to pinpoint the location of the leak
in a very scientific way.
[Narrator] This breakthrough technology
is a result of strategic partnerships
with thousands of water experts all over the world.
With their goal to solve water globally,
Xylem HQ is strategically located in New York state.
We are a global company.
Our influences are around the world
but it's nice to have a center of gravity in New York.
We have access to great talent,
access to universities,
access to other technology companies,
and that has benefited us
to more easily meet and collaborate, to learn from them.
We don't have to do everything ourselves,
it's a matter of leveraging our external ecosystem.
It bevies Xylem greatly having our headquarters
here in New York.
