This is the iPhone SE 2022.

It is the third generation iPhone SE

and an upgrade over the 2020 model,

but you'll be hard-pressed to find a real difference

from the exterior.

It has the same design and the same colors.

And it feels exactly the same

with a 4.7-inch LCD screen,

thick bezels up and below the screen right there,

and a home button with Touch ID embedded inside.

That's all well and good

if you really like this form factor.

There is no Face ID here.

Also means there is no MagSafe accessory system

like on the iPhone 13 series,

where you can magnetically stick stuff

to the back of the device.

You don't have that here,

but you do still get wireless charging on the back.

There are three major improvements here.

The first is that there is an A15 Bionic chip,

which is the same chip inside the iPhone 13,

so you're getting some of the best performance

for the price.

This is the $429 iPhone,

the cheapest iPhone.

And you really won't be able to find

any other phone in this price range

that matches that performance,

which is great.

That also means Apple says you'll get two hours

more battery life than the previous iPhone SE.

We'll have to see,

but that's always good news.

And the third upgrade is 5G connectivity.

Now there's two types of 5G,

Sub-6 and millimeter-wave.

The iPhone 13 series has both.

This only has Sub-6.

That's probably fine.

Sub-6 is the more general type

of 5G you'll run into most of the time.

It has wider coverage,

not as fast speeds

but probably isn't gonna really matter

because the amount of time you run

into millimeter-wave 5G is gonna be very, very small.

There are camera upgrades.

Apple says it's a new camera system.

And it brings a lot of features from the iPhone 13 series

like photographic styles and Deep Fusion,

but there still is no Night Mode,

which is kind of a weird omission

because obviously the chip can support it

that's on the iPhone 13.

So it's a bit of a strange omission.

I'd like to see how this really stacks up against phones

like the Pixel 5a 5G,

which does have a Night Mode

and performs really well in low light.

And that's a $450 phone.

So this might suffer in low light,

but we'll have to see as we further test this phone.

If you don't want the old design of the iPhone SE

but you do want a small iPhone,

well, that's when you'll probably wanna go

with the iPhone 13 Mini.

It's more compact

but has all those new features

like Face ID and Night Mode.

And it'll also come in this new green finish,

which I really like.

And that goes on sale on March 18th alongside the new SE.
