Wi-Fi at 100kph? According to Pim van der Jagt, MD of Ford Motors' European research centre, car-to-car communication is ready to roll out. Using Long-Term Evolution or Universal Mobile Telecommunications System standards, cars can become moving Wi-Fi hubs.
So why the delay? Among other things, it's the critical-mass factor. "It's only usable if a large percentage of cars is using it," says van der Jagt, who suggests manufacturers may have to offer the system for free for a couple of years to spur adoption. Fine by us...
