WIRED2015 Test Lab: VR and a Bond villain's new car

This year the WIRED2015 Test Lab inspired by Telefónica Open Future will be a hotbed of impressive technology and design, from smart glasses to VR headsets to James Bond's new car.

Attendees at WIRED2015 -- our annual flagship two-day conference on October 15-16 -- will have a special tech demo session at the end of the first day, getting a hands-on demonstration of some of the latest in technology and design, from brands including Jaguar, Fove, Polaris and Hyve.

Last year the Test Lab showcase included the newest incarnation of Honda's ASIMO, Harley Davidson's Scrooser, Aston Martin's DP-100and a Star Wars X-wing fighter made from old Raleigh Grifters bicycles and neon lights.

With less than a week to go until WIRED2015, here's a taste of just seven of the many technologies to be shown in the Test Lab inspired by Telefónica Open Future.

The Test Lab will showcase three Telefónica Open Future-supported elements:

GiveVision: this tech accessibility startup uses software controlled by a smartphone to turn spectacles into sight (through an audio feed in the arm of the frame). Their Test Lab stand will include a mock-up of a supermarket aisle where visitors will be invited to try on the glasses and experience what it’s like for blind people to do something the rest of us take for granted. The glasses will blur the products, simulating what it’s like to be sight-impaired, and then demonstrate how it works.

To support the upcoming publication of the Telefónica Index on Digital Life, Telefónica has produced an ambitious new 15-part series called "The Trailblazers" -- 15 millennials (aged 18 to 35) whose ventures use #techforgood. Episode one features Stan Karpenko, GiveVision’s co-founder and CEO.

FirstV1sion: a wearable broadcast system in a t-shirt. A pinhole camera is embedded into a sports shirt and films the perspective of a football game, for instance, from the wearer’s point of view. FirstV1sion is currently worn by the Spanish national basketball team and will be showcased at the Test Lab by reigning world freestyle football champion Andrew Henderson.

Smartdrone: industrial-sized drones that can detect anything from oil leaks in oceans to pest outbreaks in fields. A cage will be set up in the Test Lab so that delegates can have a go at flying the smaller drones themselves.

Delegates will also get a chance to see a Bond villain super-car: the Jaguar C-X75.

Driven by Mr Hinx in the upcoming Spectre, the Jaguar C-X75 is an all-wheel drive, plug-in parallel hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) with the world's highest specific power engine and Jaguar's first carbon composite monocoque chassis.

Other products showcased in the WIRED2015 Test Lab inspired by Telefónica Open Future include:

  • FOVE: the world’s first eye tracking VR headset.
  • ICAROS: a new fitness and gaming device from Hyve that combines your workout with a unique flying experience.
  • Polaris Slingshot: a high-performance three-wheeled roadster.
