From one of the creative directors behind the visual effects seen in the latest Star Wars movies to the compelling teenager campaigning for free menstrual products for schoolgirls from low-income households, we're excited to present the speakers for WIRED Next Generation, taking place in London on November 3, 2018.
Scientist and Engineer
Niamh Shaw is an Irish engineer, scientist, performer and communicator. She is passionate about igniting people’s curiosity and presents the human story of science, creating theatre shows, public events and contributions to media with this focus.
Creator, Cos Watercolours
Ameenah Begum created Cos Watercolours, which “upcycles” cosmetics destined for landfill into shimmery watercolour paints. The project, which Begum started while studying at the University of Sussex, puts sustainability at the forefront and follows circular economy principles.
Wildlife Biologist and Presenter
Lizzie Daly is a regular face on CBBC, Cbeebies and has worked on various BBC productions and National Geographic. She was the resident wildlife expert on The Lets Go Club on Cbeebies and is also a presenter for BBC Earth Unplugged.
Game developer, Epic Games
Sjoerd De Jong has been designing game levels using the Unreal Engine – the game engine behind Fortnite – since he was a teenager. After running his own game studio for seven years, De Jong joined Epic Games and started teaching other people how to build their own games using the engine behind hundreds of the world's biggest games.
Activist
Amika George is a teenage activist who founded the #FreePeriods movement, aimed at eradicating period poverty in the UK. After gathering hundreds of thousands of online signatures, and leading protests outside Downing Street, George helped secure £1.5 million from the government to help provide free period products to vulnerable and disadvantaged young people.
Creative Director, Industrial Light & Magic
Ben Morris is a creative director at Industrial Light and Magic where he helped create the visual effects for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Force Awakens. As well as working on Gravity, Gladiator and Harry Potter, Morris won an Oscar and BAFTA for his visual effects work on The Golden Compass.
CEO, Oblong Industries
Underkoffler lent his extensive experience in computer graphics, holography and large-scale visualization to sci-fi spectaculars including Minority Report and Iron Man, where he advised on the science of the near future. A specialist in creating beautiful, human-focused UIs, his firm, Oblong Industries is creating new ways for humans to collaborate.
Filmmaker
James Young is a BBC presenter, filmmaker and part-time cyborg. He was a tech fanatic even before an accident six years ago that left him a double amputee. James has since has been passionately exploring the relationship between humans and technology, and continues to immerse himself deep into the future of prosthetics and bionics. @jameshyoung
