France will engage in offensive cyber warfare

French defence secretary Florence Parly announced that France will engage in a policy of using “cyber arms as all other traditional weapons… to respond and attack" (The Register).

It's a significant statement in an area that governments have often been leery of admitting to and is likely to prompt a shift in international discussion and rhetoric on cyber warfare. Meanwhile, French diplomat Jean Heilbronn has suggested that online espionage should be treated as business as usual by international governments, much as its physical equivalent currently is.

Waymo to build a dedicated autonomous vehicle factory

Alphabet subsidiary Waymo says it has been approved to build the world's first dedicated Level 4 autonomous vehicle factory in the US state of Michigan (Engadget). The firm has yet to identify an appropriate facility, but it's expected that its focus will be on incorporating self-driving systems into existing vehicles like the Fiat Chrysler and Jaguar cars that already make up its fleet.

Greenland's ice sheet saw a decade of unprecedented ice loss

Between 2003 and 2013, Greenland's ice sheet melted into the oceans an an increasing rate, analysed in new research based on data from Nasa and the German Aerospace Center's GRACE satellites (BBC News). The ice loss then paused, correlating with a phase change in the North Atlantic Oscillation weather phenomenon, and researchers warn that "continued atmospheric warming will lead to southwest Greenland becoming a major contributor to sea level rise."
