Waymo forms partnership with Renault and Nissan
Waymo has formed a partnership with The Alliance – the world's largest auto industry alliance, comprising Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi (Ars Technica). Alphabet's self-driving vehicle subsidiary says that it will initially be working with Nissan and Renault to investigate commercial, regulatory and legal issues in relation to driverless transportation-as-a-service. The goal is to develop "driverless mobility services for passengers and deliveries in France and Japan" before expanding to other markets.
Foxconn chairman Gou resigns to run for president in Taiwan
Billionaire Foxconn chairman and founder Terry Gou has stood down from leading the company in order to run in Taiwan's presidential election, although he will remain on the board as semiconductor boss Young Liu takes on the role of chairman in Foxconn's new committee-based management structure (TechCrunch).
Gou must first win the nomination to stand as the presidential candidate for Taiwan's Kuomintang party, currently in opposition against president Tsai Ing-wen and the independence-focussed Democratic Progressive Party. Both Gou and Kuomintang want closer links with China, which regards its independent neighbour as a rogue province that rightfully belongs to it.
Long working hours increase stroke risk
New research based on data from 143,000 adults in France has found that working long hours – more than 10 hours a day on at least 50 days a year – increases the risk of having a stroke by 29 per cent (BBC News). That goes up to a 45 per cent risk increase if this working pattern continues for 10 years or more. The association was particularly strong for people under the age of 50.
