Russia issues warning following reports of US cyberattacks on its power grid

Russian officials have said that a US “cyberwar against Russia might be a hypothetical possibility” in the wake of a June 15 New York Times report indicating that United States Cyber Command has been attempting to place malware in systems that control Russia's power infrastructure (Ars Technica). Although some analysts think it unlikely that any such “implants” would be revealed to the press due to the resulting increased likelihood of discovery, US attitudes to cyber warfare have become increasingly hawkish in recent years.

Reports: Apple will start introducing iPhone 5G in 2020

A report from Apple-focused analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicates that Apple will begin introducing 5G cellular modems to its high-end iPhones over the course of 2020 (TechCrunch). This further bolsters a series of rumours indicating that Apple is taking it relatively slowly on the cutting-edge communications tech. The company will reportedly have 5G across its entire smartphone range by 2021.

Nasa has taken a stunning close-range image of Bennu

Nasa's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, on a sampling mission to the near-Earth asteroid 101955 Bennu, has transmitted an astonishing photo of the rocky body, taken at a distance of just 690 metres from its surface (Gizmodo). Captured on June 13 by OSIRIS-REx's NavCam 1, it shows Bennu, half-shadowed and half scintillating where sunlight strikes its surface.

Modern dogs evolved 'puppy eyes' to appeal to humans

A new study into canine facial evolution suggests that dogs' expressive eyebrows and ability to produce the sad-eyed expression known as the “AU101 movement” are the result of natural selection due to human preferences (Science). Most dog breeds have highly a levator anguli oculi medialis muscle to raise their eyebrows – something wolves lack – which gives them a range of facial expressions that, it's thought, humans have unconsciously selected for by adopting and favouring the lucky canines that can produce appealingly wistful stares.

Spotify's classical music sucks, so a new rival is going global

Classical music fans have a big problem: established streaming services such as Apple Music and Spotify simply aren't geared up to cater to their needs (WIRED). Primephonic, a Dutch-American music streaming service specialising in classical music, is hoping to service this neglected market of listeners. Since 2017, Primephonic has grown to offer over 1.5 million classical music tracks. It's still tiny, with just 50,000 users in the UK, US and Netherlands but as of June 14, the service is Europe-wide, and it will go global in July (although not in China).
