Dark web child abuse takedown leads to hundreds of arrests

337 people have been arrested around the world and 23 children have been rescued in the UK, US and Spain following an international operation to take down and identify the user of a dark web child abuse video exchange site called "Welcome to Video" (The Register).

It operated by a 23-year-old South Korean man named Jong Woo Son, who's already in prison for his role. The site, described by the UK's National Crime Agency as “one of the first to offer sickening videos for sale using the cryptocurrency bitcoin,” was discovered by law enforcement during an investigation into English paedophile Matthew Falder.

The UK's porn block is officially dead

The UK government has officially dropped its controversial plan to introduce age checks for online pornography – it had previously been subjected to three delays (WIRED). The change would have forced websites hosting adult material to install age checking systems for all UK visitors. It's now been dropped completely after being delayed for six months in June.

US officials say they're conducting cyberwarfare against Iran

Anonymous US officials have told Reuters that the United States carried out a "secret cyber operation" against Iran last month in retaliation for alleged drone strikes against Saudi Arabian oil facilities (Reuters). However, in an interview with the Fars news agency, Iranian Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi dismissed the effectiveness of any alleged attacks, saying: “They must have dreamt it.”

All stored Yahoo Groups messages are being deleted

In December, all archived content from Yahoo Groups email discussion lists will be deleted, effectively wiping out a vast chunk of the internet's digital history (The Verge). There's an option to download your groups' archived data via the Verizon Privacy Dashboard if you can still log in to the associated Yahoo account.
