Almost exactly one year ago, Donald Trump was elected President. So, a year on, what is life like in Trump’s America? To find out, we’re joined by two technological activists who’ve peered closely into its darker side.
Data scientist Emily Gorcenski was at the far-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, when a neo-Nazi drove a car into the crowd, killing one person and injuring 19 others. “It has been an enormous change,” says Gorcenski, who wrote after the rally: “I know some of those students. They were ready to die for what they believed in. I was prepared to die, too.”
Security researcher Matt Mitchell founded the monthly New York cryptoparty CryptoHarlem to educate local people about online security. “Now I see all these people identifying with these issues,” he says. “All these people need help.”
Speaking at Mozfest 2017 – the open internet festival hosted by the Mozilla Foundation – the pair discuss how their lives have changed since the election, and what they expect next from Trump’s presidency.
