Twitter has announced it is planning to increase its GIF size limit to 15MB – three times as large as the current files supported on the site.
The change was announced (relatively quietly) in an update to Twitter's GIF FAQs.
For those of us who use Twitter on mobile, files will still be limited to 5MB – it's only on the web that users can upload larger files. There's also no news on which file size external platforms such as Tweetdeck will support, though these details are expected to be updated at a later date.
This is the latest move from Twitter to add improved GIF functionality to the website. In February 2016, the site launched a native GIF search powered by Giphy. It has also increased the video size limit to 140 seconds.
Facebook Messenger has also had the Giphy treatment, with WhatsApp expected to follow suit in its next update.
