Twitter adds 69 new emoji - but there’s a catch

The new lineup includes an England flag, dinosaurs and more diverse skin tones

Twitter has added 69 new emoji to its lineup, including the long-awaited flags for England, Scotland and Wales.

The Emoji 5.0 lineup, unveiled by Twitter designer Bryan Haggerty, also includes a woman in a Hijab, dinosaurs, a swearing emoji and a variety of diverse skin tones.

"In total there are 239 new emoji included in this release. When removing duplicates and skin tones there are 69 unique new images in this collection," says Emojipedia in a blog post.

However, there’s a catch. Many of the new emoji rely on characters that are part of Unicode 10.0, reports Emojipedia, which means they won’t work on iOS and Android devices just yet.

Instead, users will only be able to see the new icons when using Twitter on desktop, for the time being, and the new flag emoji show up as black flags on some platforms that don’t support the new icons yet.

The new Twitter emoji are set to land on other platforms before the end of the year, while an update for Tweetdeck is expected "soon", according to Haggerty. Apple is expected to offer support for the new emoji in its upcoming iOS 11 software update, while those with access to the Android O developer preview should be able to see the emoji already.

Other emoji featured in the update include a vomiting emoji, an orange heart, and a breastfeeding woman. A number of new food-based icons, such as a pretzel, broccoli and pie, are also included.

Decisions about which new emoji should be introduced are made by the Unicode Consortium - the organisation responsible for ensuring the icons are standardised across different platforms.

Earlier this year, Emojipedia created a preview of the new lineup for 2017 including a full list of the proposed emoji.
