Through Kenyatta Cheese's Doctor Who Tumblr, fans communicate by creating art and tributes to the long-running TV institution. "People talk about the show, share their work and feel as though they're part of something bigger," says Cheese. He tells Wired how Whovians keep contributing. Allons-y!
Sonic Screwdriver selfies "Selfies are signifiers of identity and belonging. The fact that I'm taking one while holding my Sonic Screwdriver or wearing a fez says 'I am a Whovian'. By amplifying selfies through the Tumblr we create resonance by giving fans a sense of each other."
Gifs of favourite bits "The smallest moments -- a line, even a look between two characters -- can spawn entire branches of discussion and fan art about a scene. We even see non-Whovians using moments from the show
as a way of expressing a feeling or reaction."
Art and connecting to the past "When it was announced that Matt Smith was leaving the show, fans created thousands of pieces of art (see above). And featuring fan art that includes previous cast members gives us an opportunity to introduce fans to older seasons of the show."
Celebrating cleverness "A fan made a publicity still of the 10th and 11th Doctors from the anniversary episode into his smartphone's wallpaper. One day, at 11:10, he took a screenshot of the clock lined up with the Doctors in the image and posted it to his Tumblr blog. It's brilliant."
For the love of Twelve "One of the few Peter Capaldi quotes so far is when the incoming Doctor is alarmed about his new kidneys and how he doesn't like their colour. Immediately, fans picked up on 'Kidneys!' as a catchphrase, creating parody images and text posts."
