Wired tests some not-so-boring bits by turning walls into Swiss cheese. Check out our gallery for images and reviews.

How we tested

We bored holes in wood, brick, breezeblock and concrete to assess each drill's performance. By marking the drill bits with masking tape 4cm from the tip, we were able to time how long each drill took to reach a depth of 4cm. The same downward force (2.5kg) was applied behind the drill for the sake of consistency. The drills were first set to their full power and then to hammer mode, and multiple readings taken to provide a reliable average. Builder and decorator Jeffrey Lambert gave his professional opinion of each tool.
