Death Star trench is actually somebody's wall

This sweeping view of a futuristic city is really a section of tiled wall, modelled on the Death Star trench from Star Wars.

Created by New York studio Tom Spina Designs, the wall was custom-made for a client as part of a Star Wars-themed movie theatre in his Los Angeles home. "When I saw the space, I thought of the Death Star trench -- these chunky, futuristic blocks with exquisite details and greeblies," says Spina, 40.

Fourteen master tiles were designed, "each copied ten times and hand cast into a silicon mould, reinforced with a rigid foam-fill on top, and fibreglass and plywood at the back," says Spina. The tiles were then laid over a 9m2 area, running like a wainscot along the lower half of the room.

Other movie-themed creations in Spina's studio include a life-sized Boba Fett from The Empire Strikes Back and a menagerie of Star Wars cantina aliens for a Volkswagen advert. "We soak up so much culture from the movies, so I love the idea that people can bring a little inspiration from their favourite films into their daily lives."
