Sonos TruePlay tunes your speakers to suit your room

Sonos Trueplay allows users to tune their Sonos speaker to the room it's in -- regardless of where it's been positioned.

Trueplay works via the Sonos app, prompting users to start tuning their speaker before emitting a series of test sounds, which their phone's microphone quickly detects.

The Trueplay system then utilises the sound waves to calibrate the layout of the room and tunes up any speakers automatically, so they will (in theory) sound great whether they're up on a ledge or hidden away behind a curtain.

Trueplay utilises the same kind of tech and audio smarts that might be used to tune up a professional sound system. But instead, Sonos said Trueplay was created with regular consumers in mind.

Users will need an Apple device running iOS 7 or higher to get started with Sonos Trueplay when it launches later this year. Existing Play:1, Play:3 and Play:5 owners will get Trueplay for free.

On that note, Sonos also revealed an updated version of its flagship Play:5 speaker.

The new Play:5 has six custom-designed drivers, coupled with three mid-woofers and three tweeters to deliver a crisp, high-quality sound experience that'll seem more like multiple speakers are pumping out sound rather than just the one. All of that is packed into a sleek new design, which makes it really feel like a substantial update on the original Play:5.

It'll retail at £429 and it's available in a white or matte black finish.

It also comes with support for three different orientations -- so combined with Trueplay it's designed to pump out the best possible audio no matter where you put it or how you position it.

In a blog post Marc Whitten, Sonos CPO, said that the new Sonos speaker and TruePlay were designed for the "next wave of audio innovation". "Your music experience should fit your life, not get in the way of it. It should grow with you and stay fresh and current. We believe in hardware built to last and software that updates the experience, tuning for better music, improving with more innovation." "As we move toward a more open platform, this potential continues to grow. We are passionate about the music experience and we know many creators -- from the deepest music services to the newest mash-up innovators -- are as well.... Nobody’s home has perfect acoustics, and we don’t want to adapt our lives around our speakers. Your speakers should sound great, wherever you choose to put them. So, we decided to make them adapt to the environment around you."
