HOW WE TESTED

We chose five popular electric shavers that, together, sport a variety of cutting technologies, each claiming to offer the closest, fastest and best overall hair removal. Hair behaves very much like the nylon bristles of a paintbrush, so we clamped brushes with different types of bristle to our lab desk, enabling us to control bristle length and rigidity. Using the same sweeping motion with each razor, the time taken to level 2mm and 4mm lengths was recorded. For assessing closeness, there really is no substitute for actual human skin. Dividing the Test editor's face into five zones allowed us to compare skin smoothness after each shave. A female staff member kindly donated her leg to test the epilator.
