UK's first Paleolithic restaurant set for November launch

For all those who like their grub properly vintage, or those with dietary requirements that make eating out a hassle, a restaurant providing a menu full of Paleolithic cuisine might just offer you a solution.

Opening soon in London's Notting Hill, the restaurant, which will be called Pure Taste, started off its gastro journey as a humble monthly pop-up based in Sussex. After it caused a minor storm in food connoisseur circles, restaurant owners took the decision to launch a kickstarter campaign, which smashed its £30,000 target.

Now creator of the restaurant, Holly Readman -- a chef, nutritional therapist and chemistry graduate -- will open the UK's first gluten-free and paleo restaurant.

For the uninitiated, a paleo diet is one that humankind would've tucked into during the Paleolithic era. It's a low-carb regime with a focus on meats, eggs, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and oils and also goes by the name of the caveman, Stone Age and hunter-gatherer diet.

The paleo diet is beneficial for those with gluten intolerances or coeliac disease. This is because it is often the protein in grains like barley, wheat and rye -- which are not paleo -- containing gliadin peptides that trigger autoimmune reactions. These cause damage to the tiny projections which absorb nutrients from food into the body, and which line the small intestine.

Keen to bring back the fun of fine dining to all those with various food intolerances, Readman promises a menu full of choice. On her Kickstarter page she states: "Pure Taste will help to put free-from food firmly on the culinary map, proving that gluten-free and Paleo friendly food can feel great and taste amazing."

She wants perceptions of eating out for people with dietary restrictions to change, and knows this intimately herself as a self-described "coeliac married to someone with dairy intolerance."

The restaurant primarily caters for those with coeliac disease or gluten intolerances, but because it's so niche, Readman states in her kickstarter video that it's already drawn some curious visitors even during the pop-up stage.

So whether you're a foodie with dietary requirements wanting to bring back the fine dining fun into eating out, or just a curious visitor wanting to nurture your inner caveman, Pure Taste's menu might just have something on it that tickles your tastebuds.

Pure Taste will be located at 115 Westbourne Grove, W2 4UP, London. Reservations will be available from 1 November onwards.
