Next-gen technology and innovative architecture are, of course, very dear to WIRED's heart. But it may also surprise you to know that, on occasion, we also feel the call of the wild. And although one can venture into the great outdoors with minimal equipment, that's not quite our style.
So, we thought it was appropriate to seek out the best gear for expeditions great and small, testing everything from the latest inflatable whitewater rafts to flameless cooking systems. In such rugged situations, it pays to have your kit be as compact as possible, hence space-saving solutions such as a watch strap that can also function as an animal trap or fishing line, or a bracelet that holds 25 tools.
Should you wish to experience something more at the "glamping" end of the spectrum (and who can blame you?), we have selflessly included an appraisal of the new VW camper van. WIRED would like to clarify this had nothing to do with our Gear editor refusing to sleep in anything "where the bears could get him".
Read the WIRED Recommends guide to the for our no.1 picks in different categories, including the best tablets, best smartwatch and the best headphones for running.
