My Social Petwork: Facebook for your pets

A social network for pets has launched in the UK, catering for one of the key internet demographics shunned by Facebook -- people who want to set up personal social profiles on behalf of their pets.

My Social Petwork (do you see what they did there?) looks like the lovechild of Pinterest and Cute Overload thanks to its pinboard layout and penchant for fluffiness. It allows you to register an account as yourself, the pet owner, then add all the pets in your possession.

But while the service does allow you to make status update-like observations as said pet it also lets charities and pet-related businesses register for accounts. Depending on how these choose to use the service, the end result may be a curious mixture of advertising posts, cute pictures and sad stories.

Once the profile is set up you can follow other pets and pet owners, as well as commenting and liking updates (although liking in this instance is "hearting"), sending messages and all the other things the kids are doing on social networks these days.

The usage guide also flags up the competitive aspect of hearting, explaining that the picture with the most love will feature in the "cute box" and encouraging users to help their friends' pets achieve this. "My Social Petwork is the UK's first social networking site to give pet owners of all breeds and species the chance to come together in one place to share their pictures, videos and updates and make friends with other like-minded pet owners," said Catriona Golden, Digital Project Manager at PEP Publishing, which owns My Social Petwork.
