These incredible photographs are the work of Fabian Oefner, a Zurich-based photographer who finds ingenious ways to fling paint around. "You are looking at a structure that lasted only for the blink of an eye," says Oefner, who created "Liquid Jewel" by popping paint-covered balloons and photographing the ensuing chaos. "It is only in that fragment of a second [that] the paint looks like this, where the shades slowly start to blend into each other, and then it is gone again."
Creating the images required carefully layering a water/acrylic mixture on top of the balloons. From 100 shots, only five made the final cut, and things didn't always go to plan. "I remember one balloon burst directly into my face, while I was preparing the last layer of paint... I looked like a walking piece of art afterwards," he says.
Oefner previously used a drill to create the incredible spinning paint snapshot here and says his next paint piece will use the power of gravity. "I can promise you, the results look amazing."
