LG Fitness Band blends the best of Nike+ FuelBand and a smartwatch

LG joined the wearable tech market at CES in Las Vegas this week with the launch of the activity-monitoring LG Fitness Band.

Like many contemporaries, the Fitness Band slaps around the wrist and monitors steps taken per day, calories burned and distance traversed. With an optional accessory, the Band also tracks heart rate through the day.

But, unlike the Nike+ FuelBand for example, the Fitness Band also connects to iOS and Android devices in order to display information such as names and numbers for incoming calls and texts, plus can be used to control music apps.

Whether on iOS or Android, the Fitness Band connects to an LG-developed app to log the physical it captures. However, other apps such as MyFitnessPal and RunKeeper are also supported for activity tracking.

It's a sleek and lightweight device in the hand (or, more specifically, on the wrist) and features a touchscreen interface for swiping between display modes for calories counted or steps taken.

LG has set a price of $179 for the US, but a specific UK price hasn't been confirmed yet. We would anticipate something around the £129 mark when it launches worldwide later this year.

With its agnostic approach to supported devices and apps, and smart blending of fitness functionality and smartwatch-like phone integration, LG has produced a very exciting entrant in this increasingly crowded space of wearables.
