League of Legends' Season 3 World Championship is the most watched eSports event in history, according to Riot, which develops the multiplayer game.
Riot posted an update on the official blog stating that "over 32 million fans watched SK Telecom T1 [an esports team] earn the Summoner's Cup [a tournament award] in front of a sold-out Staples Centre."
To add a little perspective to the numbers the company points out the the Season 2 World Championship was watched by 8.2 million fans with 1.1 million concurrent viewers at its peak. Season 3's event achieved 8.5 million concurrent viewers. For wider context, Valve's Dota 2 tournament, The International 3, achieved
just over a million concurrent viewers in August.
Riot noted that it was "beyond humbled by [fans'] passion for and commitment to League of Legends" but didn't go into detail about how the numbers broke down across different broadcast platforms.
Wired.co.uk has asked Riot for further information and will update this article when we hear back.
