Smartphones are a breeding ground for germs. Kyocera wants to help change that.
The Japanese manufacturer's latest Digno handset, called Rafre, is not just waterproof, it can withstand washing in hot soapy water. And because the touchscreen is designed to be completely operational when wet, it could also appeal to those looking for a phone that works in the bath or shower.
Other specifications include a 5-inch display with 720p HD resolution, 2GB RAM running Android 7.0 Nougat, a 3,000mAh battery, and 16GB of internal storage expandable up to 200GB via a microSD card.
On the rear of the Rafre is a 13MP camera with Kyocera's image-processing AINOS Engine, and on the front is a 5MP camera. To make it truly waterproof, Kyocera has removed the speakers and instead uses what the company calls its Smart Sonic Receiver to transmit sound via vibrations to the eardrum via the phone’s display.
Software-wise, the phone comes pre-loaded with a cooking app that can be operated with hand gestures. The Rafre is available in Japan via carrier KDDI in Pale Pink, Clear White and Light Blue, although the prices is not yet known. There’s no word on UK availability or pricing and WIRED has contacted Kyocera for more information.
