This image shows what happens inside your near-finished glass of red wine overnight. The crystals, formed at the bottom of a glass of Zinfandel, were captured at 350x magnification by Gary Greenberg, a microscope developer and visiting research affiliate at the Advanced Technology Research Center for the University of Hawaii.

He used a self-designed 3D microscope and two cameras to shoot them. "As a scientist I look at some very rare events," says Greenberg. "But then I started looking at ordinary things and I realised just how extraordinary they are close up." Cheers to that.
