Almost two decades after he first appeared in print, Harry Potter's story is finally complete, author JK Rowling has confirmed.

Speaking at the premiere of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a stage play set 19 years after the events of The Deathly Hallows, creator JK Rowling said that Harry's adventures are now fully told.

The Radio Times quotes Rowling as saying that Harry "goes on a very big journey during these two plays and then, yeah, I think we're done."

The Cursed Child has been in development since at least 2013, a collaboration between Rowling, theatrical writer Jack Thorne, director John Tiffany, and producer Sonia Friedman. Split into two parts, it follows an adult Harry, married to Ginny Weasley, and their son Albus, as they deal with the weight of their family legacy.

Whether the end of Harry's stories means the end of Rowling's wizarding world is another question though. Could Harry's own children - James, Albus, and Luna - have their own adventures in their father's place?

Rowling doesn't confirm either way, but does say, "This is the next generation, you know. So, I'm thrilled to see it realised so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now."

"[The Cursed Child] chimed perfectly with the material I had about the next generation and I could see it would work perfectly," Rowling added. "So I never wanted to write another novel, but this will give the fans something special."

By all accounts, fans are very pleased with the production. In addition to rave reviews, the production - which runs at the Palace Theatre in London - is almost entirely sold out. However, a new crop of tickets is set to be released from this Friday. Each week sees the "Friday 40" event too, where a handful of bargain-priced tickets are released for the following week's performances, so all hope of seeing the show isn't lost just yet.

Failing that, the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child rehearsal script has been released in book form, and fans can return to Rowling's universe in the cinema this Christmas, with the release of spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
