You track your fitness with wristbands -- but why not use your ear canal? "Nothing has changed with headphones for 40 years," says Nikolaj Hviid, CEO of BRAGI, which raised $3m (£2m) on Kickstarter for its sensor-packed headphones. "Now, miniaturisation of chips means earphones can be turned into fitness monitors." Smart earphones measure heart rate, oxygen consumption and movement data.

Here are three that could be music to your ears.

Intel smart earbuds

These jack-powered earbuds monitor the wearer's heart rate, while tracking distance travelled and estimating calories burned through a companion app.

LG HRM earphones

The HRM measures metabolic rate and oxygen consumption, connecting to a strap-on data-processing medallion to relay real-time biometrics to your phone via Bluetooth.

BRAGI Dash

The wireless Dash monitors the wearer's heart rate, oxygen saturation and metrics such as pace, cadence and distance run. An ear-bone mic picks up jaw vibrations for clearer audio input.
