The uncertainty that COVID-19 has caused in the way we live and behave has shaken confidence in government, data, science – and even ourselves.

In this candid interview, Rachel Botsman, a Trust Fellow at the University of Oxford and the author of Who Can You Trust, and WIRED Editor-in-chief Greg Williams, discuss the different dimensions of trust, the variables affecting the perception of institutions, and the importance of good transparency from the government at a time of crisis. Recorded on: May 1, 2020.

Compelling, clear and conversational, Botsman shares her perspective on why and how our trust is shifting, the impact and consequences of communication, and how the government could offer better transparency.

"Where I think they're really falling down is they are not explaining their intentions behind the information being shared," says Botsman in the 40-minute video.

"So, why are they giving us five very high-level bullets? Why is the death rate fluctuating all over the place? Why are the modelling numbers changing so much? They're not explaining the intention behind that information being shared."
