Drones are capable of doing everything from delivering mail to spotting exam cheats, but as this visually arresting video proves, they're also capable of putting on an awesome light show.

In this collaboration between San Francisco-based designer GMUNK and The Creators Project, a fleet of quadcopter drones were equipped with multi-coloured LEDs and made to race with a car, producing dazzling loops of colour that look uncannily like they've been painted straight onto the air.

Writing about the project, GMUNK explained: "Light can be interpreted over time as a lateral, striking way to show speed when captured as a long-exposure -- it's the equivalent to a motion path in an animation program, it's how we can quantify speed and maneuverability in an easily digestible visual representation."

We're starting to wonder if there's anything drones can't do...
