The systems we use to manage emails, music and photos are outdated and inefficient, say Ofer Bergman and Steve Whittaker, authors of The Science of Managing Our Digital Stuff. With this in mind, they developed three principles to better manage our digital information.
The authors suggest using the "greying-out" system to organise files such as old CVs that you don't want to delete. This involves putting less important files into a separate part of a folder, where they can be demoted and kept away from more important ones.
Bergman and Whittaker recommend that we store our information according to the project it belongs to, regardless of the format it's kept on. The aim is to try and integrate information sources from the computer's perspective into a single location.
The authors suggest that taking notes at a lecture, for example, is more effective if we record the audio at the same time. By linking the two together later, we will have a much better recollection of the lecture, making transcription a straightforward process.
