Metapixel Studio wants to build the most realistic scanner in the world. After a conversation with a friend - Robbie Cooper - in a coffee shop, both David Herman and Cooper decided to build the world's highest resolution portable scanning rig.
It took months to build, but with the use of 105 Nikon cameras, Metapixel Studio built an incredibly high-resolution scanner that can create almost photo-realistic renderings of humans and objects. “We wanted to create the world’s highest resolution portable scanning rig,” David Herman, managing director of Metapixel Studio, told attendees at WIRED Retail 2016.

These photorealistic scans aren’t just for fun (or to creep you out a little bit). Metapixel Studio’s high resolution scanner has a number of applications within advertising and retail - whether it's for television, virtual reality or online. “Up until now we’ve been concentrating on human beings, but we can do objects as well,” explained Herman. By taking a 3D scan of a person and creating an avatar, their clothing can be adapted to their shape, giving them a better shopping experience. This can also be extended to furniture or any objects purchased online.
Metapixel Studio's scanning could also solve the issue of ordering the wrong things online, just because you hadn’t spotted the details. “The 3D scanning that we do offers incredible opportunities to retailers,” said Herman. “The scans will be 100 per cent accurate, will represent your stock, and will allow you to create experiences in VR.”
Herman believes VR will be huge for retail, and objects like his scanning rig can help consumers make better decisions, and allow retailers to sell more: “It’s definitely the future.”
