Interactive-media designer Dale Herigstad was one of the creatives behind the UI in Spielberg's Minority Report. Tom Cruise's character grabs data from a screen by hand because "we agreed the future wouldn't be devices and keyboards, it'd be 'gesture'," says Herigstad. He and his design agency, Schematic, are working on a TV remote operated by waving your hands. "The language of direction maps beautifully to gesture. It's great for navigating a screen where touch is not convenient."

Plans are also under way to make Minority Report's tailored advertising a reality. Last June, Schematic installed a 4- x 1.5-metre multi-user Touchwall at the Cannes Lions advertising festival -- the wall recognised delegates by their RFID tags and passed on pertinent information.

At this year's festival, an improved screen will be exploring its advertising potential. "We want to demonstrate how interactive advertising can translate to physical environments," says Herigstad. "People now expect benefits from advertising."
