Israeli startup StoreDot want to charge your smartphone from flat to full in 30 seconds. Their big idea: little crystals. "We take bio-organic peptides and alter their structure to produce 2nm-diameter crystals optimised for particular applications," says cofounder and CEO Doron Myersdorf.
Spun out of Tel Aviv University in 2012, StoreDot is focused on flexible displays and fast-charging batteries, and has received $30m (£18m) from investors including Samsung. In StoreDot's prototype battery, electrodes are covered in crystal NanoDots which rapidly soak up electrical current, but let it flow slowly during use.
That means "fast charging like a super capacitor, but slow discharging like a lithium-ion battery," says Myersdorf. "We will have a commercially viable battery by the end of 2016."
