iOS 9.1 gets burrito, middle finger and unicorn emoji

Apple has released iOS 9.1 to the public, with bug fixes, better Live Photos and 184 brand new emoji -- including the middle finger, a burrito and a unicorn.

The new emoji are based on a list already set by the Unicode Consortium, the organisation that standardises the list of characters across different operating systems. So they're not new, but now iOS 9.1 supports all of them -- and iOS is the first operating system to include every emoji in the Unicode Standard.

The update means all kinds of in-demand emoji are coming to iPhones, including middle finger, taco, nerd face, robot, burrito, champagne, a man in a business suit levitating, hot dog, cheese, crab, lion.

There are also added religious symbols, like prayer beads and places of worship. And a super magical unicorn. Emojipedia states that there are 184 new emoji across all categories.

Also rolling out this week are updates to Apple's watchOS for its watches -- as well as an update for OS X El Capitan, which will both get the new emoji too.

The tvOS golden master (GM) has also been released this week and Apple is now inviting developers to start submitting tvOS apps ahead of the Apple TV launch next week.

iOS 9.1 is available as an over-the-air update to all iOS 9 users. To download it go to Settings -> General -> Software Update -> Install and then follow the on-screen instructions.
