HOW WE TESTED

We paired each device with the wireless network in our test system to assess its sound quality when streaming music via AirPlay. The same BT Home Hub 802.11n router, iPhone 4 (running iOS 4.2) and Windows 7 PC (running iTunes 10.1) were used throughout. The test playlist was loaded with uncompressed sound files, which were then compressed at 320kbps. Each score also reflects design, ease of use and value for money.

HOW WE RATE

1> A complete failure in every way

2> Barely functional -- don't buy it

3> Serious flaws -- buy with caution

4> Downsides outweigh upsides

5> Recommended with reservations

6> A solid product with some issues

7> Very good, but not quite great

8> Excellent with only a few niggles

9> Nearly flawless -- buy it now

10> Metaphysical product perfection
