Adidas and Parley have teamed up to create a shoe from recycled ocean plastic and deep sea nylon nets to commemorate World Oceans Day.
A limited number of the shoes are being released, with people around the world being given until the end of July to enter a "creative Instagram contest" to earn one of the 50 pairs being made.
The shoe is made from Parley Ocean Plastic, collected in the Maldives, as well as gillnets retrieved by conservation organisation Sea Shepherd.
The product has also been made with what Adidas calls an "innovative production method", which "enables unique footwear designs to be tailored to the individual needs of any athlete."
World Oceans Day, which falls on June 8, is an annual event designed to "honour the world's oceans" and support conservation projects which protect sealife and ecosystems.
Fans can have a chance of winning a pair of the shoes by creating an Instagram video that shows "how you pledge to avoid single use plastic items".
Adidas group executive board member Eric Liedtke described the shoe as "iconic" and "for game changers".
"We can't wait to hear the stories of those who stand up, suggest creative solutions, take action and want to join us on our journey to clean up the oceans," he said.
Adidas and Parley have been working together for the past year to turn ocean plastic into "technical yarn fibres" that can be used in footwear. This shoe is the first in a series.
"So much work has happened behind the scenes since we launched our partnership with Adidas. We are creating new standards, new materials and technologies that are different to those the sporting goods industry is used to”, says Cyrill Gutsch, founder of Parley.
"It's an ongoing challenge, but we achieved the first step. Now we can replace new plastic with recycled marine plastic debris. We can create footwear and apparel products with it and we are ready to scale it up."
