Google hasn't talked about this yet at I/O 2025, but it has already shared some news about its Android XR platform.

We first demoed Android XR late in 2024. Like Android, Google will manage the platform, enticing manufacturers and developers to build for it with new hardware and apps. Initially, Google said it was working on a pair of smart glasses with Samsung, and Samsung was working on a mixed reality headset dubbed Project Moohan. Now, there’s a wave of other devices on the way.

Google is partnering with eyewear brands like Gentle Monster and Warby Parker to make “stylish glasses with Android XR,” and Samsung will be collaborating with Google to craft a reference hardware and software platform to help other manufacturers create smart glasses. Xreal, which already makes tethered smart glasses, also announced Project Aura, its first Android XR smart glasses. Google says developers can start building for the platform later this year. Samsung’s Android XR headset may arrive in 2025, but these smart glasses will likely only arrive in 2026.

With Android XR smart glasses, you can use the (optional) camera to let Gemini see what you’re seeing, message friends, make appointments, get turn-by-turn directions overlaid on the built-in display, and snap photos. Expect real-time language translation demos today, where the glasses display will show translated subtitles during a conversation.

It was just over 10 years ago when Google debuted Google Glass—let’s see if things turn out differently this time.

Thanks for Tuning In

The keynote has concluded, but Lauren is right—you should definitely read our team's other Google I/O stories. Here's Reece on AI Mode and Will's talk with DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis.

That was a wild keynote. So much AI news to digest. We're going to go grab water and snacks and Julian's smart glasses will process all of this news on our behalf. Also, the WIRED team has some amazing stories on our website so go read those.

I did! I only had to reboot once, but it worked! And so much easier than a cramped laptop screen.

On the ground and confirming for the folks at home: Julian really did blog the entire show using his spacial computing set up. Now that's commitment.

Sundar Pichai's dad and I have something in common: We are blown away by Waymo.

As he closes the show, Pichai talks about riding a Waymo with his parents. It was also a hit with my fam when they were in town.

A live demo of Android XR's language translation: two Googlers stand on stage, one speaking Farsi, the other speaking Hindi, and the English translation appears for both beneath their images on their smart glasses.

Curiously, Google is working with Samsung to create a reference hardware and software design for other manufacturers on Android XR glasses. Does that mean there won't be Pixel Smart Glasses at launch?

Yes Julian, you can see on the stream that one of his lenses (the right one) is more reflective than the other. And those are some chunky frames?

I got a hands-on look at Android XR last year; you can read more here. As mentioned earlier, Samsung's Project Moohan headset will arrive later in 2025, and Google is announcing new smart glass manufacturers for Android XR, from Gentle Monsters and Warby Parker to Xreal.

Wow! Now that's pricey. It's $50 more expensive than OpenAI's most expensive plan, ChatGPT Pro, that costs $200 a month.

There's Google AI Pro for $20 per month…and then, Google AI Ultra will cost $250 per month. $250! A VIP Pass for Google AI, Woodward says. A real missed opportunity to call it Google AI Equinox and throw in an overpriced eucalyptus-scented gym membership.
