Top Stories in May: I Saw Black and Blue, but I Heard Yanny
Looking over the most-read stories published on wired.com this month, it would be easy to call it Mueller May: the special counsel and his investigation was the subject of three (! ! !) of our most popular pieces. But the one that stood out to my mind was the impressive bit of internet sleuthing done by our own Louise Matsakis. When Yanny vs. Laurel erupted mid-month, splitting the internet into two factions reminiscent of "The Dress" (black and blue, guys), Matsakis jumped into the warm Reddit waters to find out where the meme truly originated. I won't spoil the genesis, but suffice it to say that Yanny vs. Laurel was borne out of a wholesome discovery that made me believe again in the serendipity of the internet—and the delightfulness of teenage-dom.
