The Best Rugs for Living Like a Grown-Up

If you love the durability and easy-clean quality of polyester rugs but hate their often cheap look and feel, Rejuvenation’s indoor/outdoor rugs are for you. The company’s new Winnie rug, handmade in India, combines the performance of PET with the high-end quality and style Rejuvenation is known for. I was surprised by how great the cream-and-blue honeycomb pattern looked on both my redwood-stained deck and oak floor, and how durable the rug was with its hand-knotted craftsmanship. It also looks almost exactly like it was made with natural fibers—I actually had completely forgotten it was made from recycled plastic water bottles and not wool until I sat down to write this review. My two cats, unfortunately, very much enjoyed using it to sharpen their claws, but even after three months of this, there’s nary a loop or thread out of place. Like the company’s Sumaru rug, the corners of the Winnie have fought my attempts to tamp them down and thus still curl slightly up, but I am holding out hope for the ice cube trick.

The shed-resistant Winnie is plenty thick and tough enough to withstand outdoor foot traffic, though stain removal on the light-colored surface has admittedly been a bit challenging, especially when it comes to dirt. It can be hosed down, but dark-colored stains are ground in rather quickly—I would definitely recommend putting this rug somewhere so it won’t suffer dirty footprints. This adorable, high-pile rug from Revival transformed my son’s room from a bland baby room into a fun kids room. The dinosaur woven in the middle of the Bronto rug still makes the room feel fun and cute, without being tacky or distracting. Not that my son really minds. He was thrilled about the dinosaur addition, and I’ve been thrilled with how soft and fluffy this rug is when we play in his room or lay on the floor to read books together. It’s a soft place to land when my son rolls off his floor bed—he stays asleep as if he was still on his bed. It started out a little firmer, but the wool has only gotten softer in the months it’s been on his floor, with no matting or flat spots in sight yet.

The high pile does mean it’s prone to shedding, though. Revival says it can shed for up to six months. I luckily vacuum regularly, but the first few times I vacuumed it this rug could fill the entire dust bin of my cordless vacuum on its own. After a few months, it’s not filling my vacuums up to the brim anymore (though I do vacuum at least once a week, if not twice) but there is still regular shedding. The Sumaru is handmade in India and looks incredible anywhere it’s placed, from a hall to a dining room. It’s got 40 knots per inch and a 1-inch cream-colored fringe and arrives rolled around a hard cardboard tube. Because of this, however, it does take some work to get it to lie flat. I placed a tall stack of hardcover books on each of the four corners for a week and the corners still curled slightly up, even after three months. I haven’t yet tried it, but I’ve heard letting ice cubes melt on the corners can work. It also definitely needs a rug pad (not included), as it will slide around and could be a tripping hazard for anyone elderly, disabled, or learning to walk.

Because of the delicate, handmade quality and natural fibers, this rug does take more care than a synthetic rug. It needs to be vacuumed on low power without a beater brush, placed somewhere away from direct sunlight and rotated regularly to ensure even wear. It should also be cleaned immediately if it suffers a spill or stain—both of my cats have barfed on it, and it does take some work to clean if you don’t spot the problem immediately. The Loloi rug resided in my living room for three years before migrating under my bed, but it's still in fantastic shape.
