Red’s modular camera system has become Hollywood’s favorite high-end Lego set, letting cinematographers mix à la carte lens mounts, grips, and storage drives. The heart of that package, where the sensor lives, is what Red calls a brain. Red’s latest brain, the Weapon 8K S35, features the company’s new Helium sensor, which captures four times the resolution of 4K. That’s more pixels than the projector at your local megaplex can handle (the 8K revolution is still years away), but the Helium shines in other ways. When the 8K video is “down-rezzed” to 4K, each 35-megapixel frame remains pristinely detailed. Tinseltown is already all in: The photon-slurping Weapon was deployed for Transformers: The Last Knight and the second season of Netflix’s Stranger Things. Don’t worry, despite the extra pixels the Upside Down will still be a dark mystery. | $49,500
