Those Terrifying Skull Crawlers in Kong Were Inspired by … Pokémon’s Cubone

No, seriously.

Toby Kebbell is a very versatile actor. He’s portrayed villains, rockers, even an orc. In Kong: Skull Island he’s duty-bound soldier Jack Chapman, but he also plays a character most people might not be aware of: Kong himself.

How'd that happen? Well, during the making of Skull Island, Industrial Light & Magic—which handled much of the VFX work on the film—used the facial-capture performance Kebbell gave for his turn as Durotan in Warcraft as a reference for their Kong. So during that scene in the lake when Jack Chapman comes face-to-face with the big ape, he’s actually coming face-to-face with himself. Trippy, huh?

That's not the only strange reference the VFX team used. You know those crazy three-legged skull crawlers? Those got their look from Pokémon's Cubone. (Now that you know this, you'll never be able to unsee it.) Find out how ILM created Kong, and the many other monsters of Skull Island, in the video above.
