The First Trailer for Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk Drops Plenty of Bombs

The extended look at the World War II drama—which stars Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, and Mark Rylance—promises lots of on-the-beach bravado.

The first extended trailer for writer-director Christopher Nolan's World War II epic Dunkirk has arrived, and---as with so many of Nolan's films---it promises no shortage of drama, derring-do, and more than a few dark nights. Based on the infamous 1940 Dunkirk evacuation, in which more than 300,000 Allied soldiers were rescued from a Nazi offensive in little more than a week, the film stars previous Nolan collaborators Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, as well as Kenneth Branagh and recent Oscar-winner Mark Rylance.

Based on the first glimpse, expect plenty of battles by land and by sea, as well as lots of shots of well-respected English actors staring forlornly at the sky. We'll see what they see when Dunkirk opens July 21st.
