Illustrator Kevin Tong has designed over 100 prints for Austin-based print shop and art gallery Mondo, ranging from Pixar films and The Wizard of Oz to Upstream Color and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. But in addition to creating sumptuous art prints, Tong and fellow illustrator Tom Whalen also run Info•Rama, a print company that creates heavily researched, highly-detailed infographic posters.
To Eric Garza, head of creative production at Mondo, those two threads offered a great opportunity to blend data-driven pop-culture observations with the aesthetic of limited edition silkscreen prints—plus all the franchise licenses Mondo has to offer. The result is Info•Rama, a show at the Mondo gallery that showcases some of the coolest pop culture infographics Mondo has ever produced.
Unlike other Mondo Gallery shows, which focus on a specific genre or a particular artist, the Info•Rama show provided Tong and Whalen the opportunity to use Mondo's licenses for properties like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Avengers, and Jaws, and take a different approach than the typical updated poster. They got to emphasize wide ranges of characters, summarize entire film plots, or call out pieces of an intricate prop or vehicle.
The finished posters aren’t designed to simply hang on a wall and look aesthetically pleasing, they’re supposed to impart a bit of cheeky wisdom or look through a completist lens at a pop-culture property as well.
In honor of Info•Rama opening tonight at Mondo’s Austin headquarters, we’ve got a sampling of the infographics that will be on display. Flip through the gallery above to see infographics for the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future, a couple more for Adam West's utility belt from the 1960s Batman series, and "The Spotter's Guide to Dinosaurs,"—a collection of “facts” about the species that appear in the Jurassic Park films. “It’s not necessarily true to life,” says Garza. “We pulled facts of the dinosaurs as they appeared in the film.”
