Disney’s latest version of The Jungle Book hit theaters this past weekend and has already made more than $300 million worldwide at the box office. That follows the massive success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens from Disney’s Lucasfilm, and the also boffo B.O. of Zootopia. Next month, the Mouse House will release another sure-to-be-juggernaut with Captain America: Civil War from its subsidiary Marvel Studios.
So, is Disney too big to fail? Probably. And on this week’s Monitor podcast we’re very curious to figure out how long the streak will last. Will it go through Phase 57 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Will Rey be a septuagenarian by the time she’s done making good Star Wars movies? Will we ever get a live-action Fantasia?! (Wait. Never mind.) Really, will Disney—the Steph Curry of movie studios—ever stop dropping billion-dollar blockbusters? Doubt it.
Disney isn’t the only thing on our minds this week. There’s also the return of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to Netflix and the impending release of The Huntsman: Winter’s War. So grab your mouse ears and tune them to the WIRED Culture channel. We’re broadcasting (sort of) live right now.
