The words "Donald Trump" have meant many things to many people, but throughout 2015 no one found them as valuable as late-night political-comedy-talk-show hosts. Well, except for John Oliver; the Last Week Tonight host chose to cover other elections rather than join in the maelstrom of primary election coverage months before anyone went to the polls. But now that the 2016 primary is in full swing, Oliver is wading into the fray—last night on HBO, while the Oscars were still airing on ABC, he finally gave Trump the full LWT treatment.
Beyond all the easy jokes, the crux of the exhaustive 21-minute segment interrogates the weight of the name "Trump": Trump himself values his brand at around $3 billion, and his supporters feel that his name connotes success and wealth. But with the candidate taking shots at Oliver’s former Daily Show boss Jon Stewart for changing his name, Last Week Tonight thought it only right to do the same with Trump, whose ancestors changed the family name from its original Drumpf. Cue “Make Donald Drumpf Again”! There’s a hashtag, an official website selling campaign gear (like that awful red baseball cap), and even a Chrome extension, which will change every instance of Trump back to the original Drumpf. Enable it if you're so inclined—but you may want to think twice if you're a bridge enthusiast, lest your favorite message board devolve into lengthy discussions of declaring "no-drumpf."
