Activision will release the sequel to Bungie's shooter Destiny in the year 2017, it said today.

This year, the publisher will continue to support the online multiplayer shooter with a "large new expansion." Activision said today that Destiny currently has over 25 million registered users who have logged 3 billion hours playing the game.

Activision also said that this year would bring a new Call of Duty and Skylanders games from original developers Infinity Ward and Toys For Bob, but no more Guitar Hero games. Activision said on a conference call Thursday that Skylanders and Guitar Hero had had "lower than expected" performance in 2015, and that it expects Call of Duty and Skylanders sales of the new versions to decrease again this holiday season.

Last year's major Destiny expansion The Taken King introduced a new series of story missions, a wide array of new quests, and a new hub area to patrol.
