Here's the Trailer for the Surprise 'Cloverfield' Sequel

The sequel to the J.J. Abrams-produced 2008 hit is so top-secret, we didn't know it was coming.

The trailer for the new *Cloverfield *sequel is here, and---wait, what? There's a *Cloverfield *sequel? Indeed!

Apparently, during his downtime from Rey and Ren, J.J. Abrams (and his Bad Robot cabal) were secretly putting together 10 Cloverfield Lane, a follow-up to his 2008 faux-found-footage hit. Featuring John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), and John Gallagher, Jr. (The Newsroom), *10 Cloverfield Lane *appears to take place in an underground bunker, where the three idly pass the time making puzzles, reading books, and listening to classic proto-power pop tunes. Soon, though, tensions rise, and Goodman finds himself locked outside and facing down...well, we don't actually get to see what's out there, but it's clearly enough to inspire both the heebies *and *the jeebies. Maybe it's Randall "Tex" Cobb?

If you're looking for more plot points, we wish you luck! The original Cloverfield, in which New York City gets a monster makeover, was produced and marketed with almost Warren Commission-like secrecy---so much so, it prompted a web-wide search for clues in the months before its release (remember when some people thought it was a Voltron movie?). The origins of this followup are equally mysterious: According to Collider, Lane was originally a post-apocalyptic drama titled *Valencia *and/or The Cellar, but Abrams told the site the film was always considereda "blood relative" of Cloverfield. "We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible," he said. It was only late this week---when the *10 Cloverfield Lane *teaser started popping up in theaters before the just-released 13 Hours---that the film's true identity was revealed. All we know for sure is that web-show veteran Dan Trachtenberg is directing, and that *Whiplash *writer-director Damien Chazelle helped work on the script. We'll find out more (maybe?) when *10 Cloverfield Lane *opens March 11.
