Design FX: How They Made the Incredible Effects of The Force Awakens

A lot of digital wizardry went into creating the new Star Wars watering hole proprietor. Here's how ILM did it.

Director J.J. Abrams aimed to use practical effects whenever possible on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. But for some scenes and characters, he just had to use CGI. One such digital performer was Maz Kanata, the watering hole proprietor played by Lupita Nyong'o. To get Maz's expressions just right, Nyong'o's movements and expressions were captured using a system called Medusa and then sent to the VFX teams at Industrial Light & Magic to be turned into Maz. But she wasn't the only one done digitally. Check out the Design FX video above to see just how ILM built the wild, wonderful world of The Force Awakens.
