Culture Podcast: We Can't Believe We're Talking About #OscarsSoWhite Again

This week on WIRED’s culture podcast we’re talking about diversity in the Oscar nominations. A lot.
Mad Max Fury Road has been nominated for Best Picture at the 2016 Oscars.

Last year, as the final little golden men were being handed out during the Academy Awards telecast, a new hashtag emerged to reflect how overwhelmingly caucasian the nominees and winners were: #OscarsSoWhite. Lest anyone think that last year’s Oscars were a fluke or that the whiteness of the winners was just a coincidence, this year’s nominees are … possibly even whiter than last year’s bunch.

Sigh.

You see, we intended to spend much of this week’s Monitor podcast doing two things: Discussing our excitement for the Academy Award nominees and looking forward to the movies we’re most excited to see at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival. We were able to do that, of course, but even as we did a fist-pump to congratulate Mad Max: Fury Road on its Oscar nomination, we were too frustrated by the lack of diversity in this year’s list of nominees to really enjoy the moment.

Alas, we forge on. After getting out our feelings on the Oscar noms, we found some time to get excited about Sundance (there’s some really interesting stuff coming, you guys) and mourn the passing of actor Alan Rickman. Tune in here to hear editors and contributors Peter Rubin, Angela Watercutter, and K.M. McFarland break it all down.
