Does watching Scream Queens make you go ?? Does Cookie Lyon on Empire leave you all ?? According to a report from Twitter, you're not alone.
Shortly after Twitter started letting people use of emoji in April of last year, it also started tracking how people in the US use them when they talk about TV. It found nearly 10 percent of tweets about TV contained emojis—a number that rose to 14 percent by the end of this year's spring season in July.
What's even more interesting is Twitter found the most popular emoji is ? —aka the "face with tears of joy" emoji that Oxford Dictionaries named Word of the Year. It appeared in 24 percent of the tweets about TV that used emoji. Right behind that were ? at 12 percent, ? with 8 percent, and ? and ? at 6 percent each. (Man, we have a lot of feelings about TV, huh?)
And really, what better way is there to talk about TV on Twitter? The platform allows just 140 characters per tweet, and ? is a much more efficient way of saying you're upset about [Spoiler Alert]'s shocking death on Sunday than saying "OMG, what just happened?! My heart is broken!" (OK, you'd probably just use ? for that last part, but still.)
Twitter's findings also revealed there are some genres of TV that garner the most tweets containing emoji (music programs rank highest, followed by dramas), and that certain types of emojis correspond to those genres. Reality TV, for example, garners a lot of ?, ?, and ?, while sports—unsurprisingly— get a lot of ?s and ?s.
